Capitalism, Democracy & Inequality
Political Economy of Our Times
Is globalization over, and what kind of capitalism comes next?
17:00 · Hybrid
What you will learn
This workshop maps the forces reshaping the world economy in four introductory, engaging seminars. You will begin with Wolfgang Streeck's Taking Back Control?, which argues that the age of globalism is giving way to a renewed struggle over the nation-state and its powers. You will then turn to Branko Milanovic's Capitalism, Alone, which contrasts the West's liberal meritocratic capitalism with China's state-led model and asks what their rivalry means for inequality and globalization. The final seminar examines the forces driving these changes, from the rise of finance and rentier income to the derisking state and the digital revolution that is concentrating wealth in a handful of superstar cities and firms. Throughout, you will learn to read today's economic upheavals as part of a longer transformation of capitalism.
Why it matters now
Tariffs, industrial policy and economic nationalism are back, and the open global economy of recent decades is fragmenting. At the same time, technological change and finance are concentrating wealth and power as never before. Understanding the long-term forces behind these shifts is the best preparation for judging where the world economy is heading.
