What you will learn
Drawing on Perry Mehrling's Money View and centerd on Paola Subacchi's The People's Money, this reading group situates China's economic development within a monetary and financial framework. It aims to (1) examine the development of the Chinese economy from a financial perspective; (2) analyze the political challenges and opportunities arising from the internationalization of the renminbi; (3) understand the technical workings of China's dual-currency system (CNY and CNH), its balance of payments and the People's Bank of China's balance sheet, highlighting how these differ from those of Western economies and other emerging markets; and (4) engage with current debates on the international monetary order.
Why it matters now
China is at the center of a radical shift in the balance of power within the capitalist economic system. Studying the history of the renminbi and of China's financial infrastructure is an indispensable requirement for understanding the future development of the global order.
